Hello everyone,
My dad is giving up his PC since he needs some mobility and will run my ROG Zephyrus on the dock station at home. Could you help me with a question about what to do with HDDs?
We need to put them somewhere to keep them accessible with a laptop and I am considering purchasing a thing like ICY BOX IB-3640SU3. He has 3x 4TB HDDs installed in his PC, 2 WD REDs and 1 Seagate IronWolf. I’m also going to gift him 14TB WD DC I recently got.
Data is mostly cold; he stores archives of weddings and drone footage recordings. He is going to edit from the 850X I installed in Zephyrus, which should be fine.
Can you please tell me:
– How good are those ICY BOXes? Or should I consider ORICO?
– Orico, what I see from the reviews tends to die after some time, and I saw mentions of ICY BOX doing great. How is your experience with them?
– How bad is ICY BOX in terms of speed?
– Is there anything else I should consider?
ORICO I have to order from Ali/Amazon. ICY BOX is available in the store locally in Vienna.
I don’t consider Terramaster and OWC, as they’re sold at the same price as a complete QNAP. Crazy.
Also, I don’t believe he needs QNAP (I own TS464-8G) or Synology, and also thing will reformat the drives… It will stay connected to the workplace on the laptop.
I know in the perfect world would be nice to build RAID and blah, but I am looking for a budget option with a minimum effort, but with a good price/performance ratio.
Would greatly appreciate any advice, good ideas or feedback!
Wishing you reliable storage and cheap HDDs, thanks!
